Entry zero

Have you ever had someone tell you to do something "just because"?  Growing up, after incessant questions about why I need to do my homework/chores/whatever my parents would sometimes revert to saying "just because" or "because I say so.”  This unsatisfactory answer would only leave me feeling more rebellious and not wanting to do whatever "it" was.

These "just because" times were certainly helpful because if I had never tried to do something I may not have had the chance to discover the value of hard work.  In fact, these formative years were essential in forming a base of discipline and instilling a work ethic towards things I both did and did not enjoy.

As I grew older, I began acquiring several hobbies which helped me focus and hone my skills.  Indeed, I felt in a flow state with these hobbies and they left me feeling renewed and invigorated. Running became both a physical and mental outlet where my mind could wander.  Juggling became a stress relief outlet and provided a confidence boost in my abilities whenever I noticed improvement.  Stargazing and Astronomy drove me to improve my knowledge of objects in space and let me gain a new perspective.  I learned throughout my young years that activities that I did not resonate with left me tired and needing a break, while activities that were engaging intellectually, physically and emotionally left me energized.

This blog is all about the journey, not specifically my journey, but about our journey to find your bent, your rhythm, your flow in life.  There is actually no destination but a continual process of finding a flow state.  This could be in a career, hobby, side-project, volunteering, etc.  Your flow is where you are most optimally positioned to make a positive contribution to the world.  The voyage is not always clear, but reflecting back can help guide you forward to continually find your flow.

Until next time,

Follow your flow
